England forbids Tom & Jerry to smoke!

Tom & Jerry article

I couldn't help but notice how this news story relates to Smoke O' Lantern.   In a move which further eliminates smoking from our culture, Turner Broadcasting will be modifying scenes from these decades-old cartoons to remove smoking from them.

You know, in the world of Smoke O' Lantern, it is mentioned briefly that books containing smoking in them have been burned, which is sort of a radical vision of the future. I should have known when writing the script however that in real life we don't burn books anymore, we rewrite them to suit our tastes.   We rename streets, we come up with new words for things when the old words are too offensive.

It's comforting to know that when history bugs us, we can always fix it and make it right.   When truth bugs us, we'll tell ourselves a new truth.   That way we are safe, and our views will never be challenged by something from the past.

Catholicism vs. witchcraft in Africa

Witchcraft article

Another news story that touches on one of Smoke O' Lantern's minor themes. I find it interesting that even today, we have things like this going on in the world.

An excerpt...

"The belief that ancestors are endowed with supernatural powers borders on idolatry. It is God, and God alone, who is all-powerful while the ancestors are created by him," said the pastoral letter to priests issued earlier this month.

epilogue

Written and directed by Terry Rudy, and co-produced by myself back in 1998 (our old "amateur days", but "amateur" isn't always a bad thing...)

Warning, production values are not to be found here. But if you don't dig epilogue... Well you, sir, are no fan of horror.
